business.
While we're forging into the future, bringing

service, we remain committed to our communities, our employees
and our most valuable asset-our customers.

State Bank History |
At the turn of the twentieth
century, when coal mining flourished in Saline County, John
Davenport and H. E. Willis of Harrisburg joined the Galeener
brothers of Eldorado S. C. and P. H. to form a
financial institution behind the façade of a small storefront
at 1340 Locust Street in downtown Eldorado.
These same men petitioned Illinois' Auditor of Public Accounts
for a State Banking Charter on November 24, 1905, submitting
the capital stock at $25,000, and dividing it into 250 shares
at $100 each.
Of the 250 shares, Davenport, the original president of First
State Bank, owned 50, as did William W. White, his business
associate. L. F. Wise purchased 10 shares; S. C. Galeener, 13;
and P. H. Galeener, 15. The largest stockholder was H. E. Willis,
with 112 shares.
Seven months and twenty days later (July 14, 1906), the First
State Bank received a charter, making it the First State Bank
in the township of Eldorado and, ultimately, the oldest State
Bank in Saline County.
Immediately thereafter, the founders of the newly created bank
purchased a parcel of land, including a small wooden building,
on the "Five-Way" corner of Fourth and Locust Streets.
The price paid to Francis M. Elder, the owner: $10.
The small structure (previously used by Dr. Charles Choisser,
and purchased by Dr. Jim Johnson for his animal hospital) was
relocated two blocks north. Tom Wilson, a prominent contractor,
then built First State Bank a sturdy brick building. So sturdy,
in fact, that after over ninety years it still houses the bank's
main facility, having sustained a few cosmetic changes, including:
 |
|
Removing a horse trough from the outside
of the bank's entrance to make room for progress (paving
the streets in 1910). |
|
|
Incorporating the area facing Locust Street,
which for years had been Larren Evans' agency and bus
station. |
|
|
Revamping more office space from the area
occupied by R. E. Hopkins and Sons' Busy Bee Café. |
|
|
Capping off the water pump that once stood
near the old entrance on Locust Street. |
|
|
Remodeling the space where Charles V. Parker
Co. managed a "sticker office" for coal miners,
a men's clothing store called the Crown Tailor, and Sam
O. Nash's cleaning and pressing business, which later
became Ewing Skelton and James Gasaway men's store, followed
by Drapers Store for Men, then, Scribner's Store for Men. |
|
|
Creating additional space from areas that
once housed Redfearn's Jewelry, Vessell's Dry Cleaners,
and Steve Bacharis' "6 for a Quarter Hamburgers"
Sandwich Shop. |
|
|
Expanding to incorporate the building to
the south of the bank once known as Carter & Choisser
Pharmacy, later Eldorado Pharmacy, thus creating executive
office space and a Board of Directors Room. |
This two-story building that First State Bank has occupied for
100 years qualifies as one of the oldest buildings in Eldorado.
In fact, First State Bank's banking business is the second oldest
business in town.
While these facts may afford First State Bank a stellar place
in the world of antiquity, they have not deterred the stockholders
and the bank's employees from moving into the future.
 |
|
On January 2, 1982, the bank obtained authorization
to open a branch in Equality, Illinois. This was the first
branch application approved by the State of Illinois. |
|
|
A convenient highway facility was opened
on April 24, 1985, at the corner of Routes 45 and 142. |
|
|
Capital First Corporation, a wholly owned
subsidiary of First State Bank, was established in 1986
as a full-service residential mortgage lender later focusing
its attention to farm mortgage lending. |
|
|
American Farm Mortgage Company of Louisville,
Kentucky, was purchased in 1990, and became a wholly owned
subsidiary of First State Bank |
|
|
An Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) was put into service
on May 19, 1997 located at the highway facility at the
corner of Routes 45 and 142.
|
|
|
The main facility completed remodeling,
including adding additional executive office space and
work areas, in early 1999. |
|
|
In late 2004, the highway facility underwent a major
technological and asthetic upgrade. Enhancements included
a state of the art ATM, wider drive-through lanes, two-way
teller video screens as well as various interior and
exterior improvements.
|
|
|
On December 31, 2004 Capital First Corporation
and American Farm Mortgage Company merged. American Farm
Mortgage Company, the surviving entity, now services over
$250 million in agricultural real estate loans. |
|
|
In early 2005, services at the highway
facility were expanded to include commercial, agricultural
and consumer lending, along with the bank's full array
of deposit products. |
|
|
On December 7, 2005, First State Bank purchased the
First National Bank of Dana's branch located in Evansville,
Indiana.
|
In our 100th year, First State Bank is forging ahead into the
future, continuing our strategic goal of providing our community
with a premier financial institution, which maintains old-fashion
values, remains independently owned, and clings to our most
valuable asset... our customers.
